Abstract

Haemoglobin F replaces Haemoglobin A in patients of thalassemia major. Estimation of haemoglobin F is an essential test for the diagnosis of thalassemias and other haemoglobinoapathies. Based on the principle that Haemoglobin F shows increased resistance to alkali and acid compared to haemoglobin A, the tests of alkali denaturation of Betke et al. and Kleihauer are carried out in the laboratory. These are simple and cost effective procedures for the early detection of haemoglobin F.
