Abstract

Haemoglobin Electrophoresis is an established procedure for investigation of haemoglobinopathies. Hemoglobin electrophoresis is performed in two different mediums. The one performed in alkaline pH is known as Cellulose Acetate and the other one is Gel Agar performed at acidic pH. Both types of procedures have specific indications. The procedures is based on the principle that charged hemoglobin molecules move in an alkaline or acidic medium from cathode towards annode. Some hemoglobin molecules travel faster and longer while some are slower and cover a shorter distance. Normal controls are run parallel to the test samples. Both procedures of Cellulose Acetate and Gel Agar are described in detail in this chapter.
