Abstract

This chapter deals with dysmenorrhea which is one of the commonest gynecological disorders affecting women in the reproductive age group. Dysmenorrhea is defined as pain associated with menstruation. It describes the various types of dysmenorrhea with their risk factors and etiology. The management protocol has been schematically represented using flowcharts, describing the various medical and surgical methods. Dysmenorrhea is preventable to some extent and the preventive measures have also been listed. A brief mention has been made of the recent advances made in the management of this disorder and the various differential diagnosis of this condition. The aim of this chapter is to enable the student to have a concise and complete overview of this menstrual disorder. Thus the management of dysmenorrhea starts from correct diagnosis of the condition, differentiation between primary and secondary dysmenorrhea and whether there is need for contraception. Once the correct diagnosis has been made the patient must be reassured and appropriate therapy started. Laparoscopy should be advocated in patients not responding to medical treatment for more than six months to one year. Thus dysmenorrhea is no longer believed to be a psychological problem but often physiological and at times due to pathology which deserves treatment due to its ability to alter efficiency and quality of life for a woman.
