Abstract

Intersexuality may be defined as the presence of both male and female external and or internal genital organs in the same individual causing confusion in the diagnosis of true sex. The incidence is about 2 per 1000. One of the responsibilities of the obstetrician is the assignment of sex to the newborn. Sexual differentiation and subsequent normal development are fundamental to the continuation of the human species. If the external genitalia of the newborn are ambiguous (with respect to complete male or female development), a profound dilemma is faced. An incorrect assignment of sex threatens grave psychological and social problems for the baby and family. So every obstetrician must be well versed with the problem and be able to establish the diagnosis.
