Abstract

This chapter discusses the common psychosocial problems faced by children with chronic renal diseases, their parents, siblings and pediatrician. It deals with the role of the pediatrician in helping the family minimize the psychological destructive effect of chronic renal diseases. Except for acute glomerulonephritis and lower urinary tract infections, most renal diseases are chronic which extend over years affecting nutrition, growth, education, physical, mental and social development. Minimal change nephrotic syndrome, one of the commonest renal diseases has a benign and a prolonged course with a satisfactory outcome. Frequent relapses require multiple hospital visits, increased risk of serious infections, repeated hospitalization, school absenteeism and prolonged drug therapy. Patients with nephrotic syndrome show hyperactivity, excessive appetite, obesity and stunted growth resulting in depression, anxiety, poor school performance and impaired social relationship with parents, siblings and friends. The cost of medication often deprives essential care for other members of the family.
