Abstract

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection in children with variable symptomatology. In neonatal period UTI manifests usually as septicemia and is of acute nature. In infants and older children UTI can present as either acute or chronic infection. High recurrence is common. UTI can be associated with various urinary anomalies and voiding dysfunctions, which aids in chronicity. In chronic UTI high morbidity is usual with renal scarring, calculi disorder, hypertension and chronic renal failure. The diagnostic evaluation of childhood UTI has undergone useful changes and non-invasive methods such as ultrasonography and radioisotope imaging have become very useful and reliable investigatory tools. The renal cortex at the growing age is vulnerable to renal parenchymal damage resulting in morbidity not only in younger age but also at a later stage, which includes chronic renal failure.
