Abstract

Renal stone disease which was once considered uncommon in children is being seen relatively more frequently due to affluence and high protein diet. Various conditions, renal, urological, endocrine and metabolic disorders are associated with renal stone disease. The main factor that is important in stone formation is the precipitation of salt when the activity products of its constituents exceed certain critical levels. Various physiochemical and anatomical factors play a role in stone formation. Anatomical factors include obstructive uropathy and neurogenic bladder and physiochemical factors include urinary flow rate, urine pH, solute excretion rate in urine and excretion of substances promoting nucleation like uric acid. Urinary infection with urea splitting organisms such as proteus is also an important cause of childhood urolithiasis.
