Abstract

Hemodialysis (HD) as a clinical procedure evolved subsequent to the development of cellophane, heparin and suitable vascular accesses. A progressive increase of technical and medical experience in the field of HD has developed new alternative methods of blood purification; hemofilteration, continuous arteriovenous hemofilteration and hemodiafilteration. Extracorporeal therapy for renal failure refers to the process in which fluid and solutes are removed from or added to the patient’s body outside the body. During this process, blood from the patient is continuously circulated through the artificial kidney and returned to the patient. The artificial kidney is designed to remove uremic toxins from the body, restore water and electrolyte balance and correct acid base disturbances. The artificial kidney is made up of several thousand parallel hollow fibers.
