Renal biopsy is a valuable procedure in children for the diagnosis of renal disease, both in the native and transplanted kidney. The value of renal biopsy would be to provide the nephrologist with information that would be critical in diagnosis, prognosis and guiding the therapy. The primary indications in clinical practice include an evaluation of proteinuria, microscopic hematuria, renal manifestations of systemic diseases and unexplained acute renal failure. It is also valuable in management of renal transplant recipients to assess the cause of acute renal dysfunction. Numerous children suffering from nephrotic syndrome (NS) have undergone renal biopsy, when the procedure first became available, majority of them have been minimal change disease (MCD) and responsive to corticosteroids.
