This book Recent Advances in Ophthalmology (seventh volume) is quite informative on newer developments in selected areas and useful in ophthalmologists their day-to-day care of their patients. This book, comprehensively discussed the changing concepts in the management of retinoblastoma. New procedures such as, macular translocation for ARMD, sheathotomy for BRVO, radial neurotomy for CRVO, and foetal neural cells transplant for RP, are presently in an experimental stage and need to be refined and evaluated before adopting clinically. New drug delivery systems which incorporate drugs in a programmed dosage to be delivered at a predetermined rate, over an extended period, at a targeted ocular tissue have been developed. The management of childhood cataract is a challenge which can be accepted by proper planning and implantation of appropriate sized, flexible intraocular lens in the capsular beg. Some of the children may need primary posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy. The optic neuropathy in glaucoma is attributed to a progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells due to apoptosis. In this book evaluate the neuroprotective potential of brimonidine in animal models. They have demonstrated the presence of alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the rat retina. The activation of these receptors by brimonidine may prevent mitochondrial signaling of apoptosis. However, the neuroprotective effect of the drug is not yet established clinically. The described principle and specificity and sensitivity of the each equipment. However, none of these instruments can detect the early loss of retinal ganglion cells in glaucoma. Additionally, the volume contains informative chapters on the pathogenesis of Acanthamoeba keratitis.
