Chapters 1–5 outline the general principles of minimally invasive thoracic surgery: history, rationale, anesthetic techniques and, in an era of the multi-disciplinary team approach, how to set up a surgical program. Chapters 6–13 discuss all aspects of lung resections, from wedge resections to complex resections (pneumonectomies, en-bloc chest wall resections). Later chapters cover a number of benign conditions that can be successfully treated using video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), with two chapters on the more recent role of robotic surgery, now emerging as a standard technique performed by most thoracic surgeons. The last two chapters are dedicated to endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) and navigational bronchoscopy which, even if not firmly in the surgical arena, are still relevant to many thoracic surgeons. This book is helpful for the reader consolidate his or her understanding of clinical concepts and technical procedures, and provides an overview of the latest best practice perioperative care in minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
